The emergence of the Canal Operación Triunfo is the result of something quite unique: the creation of a theme channel resulting from a television programme. Operación triunfo has been so successful that, from the 27th of December 2001, three months after it started, live transmission began of the singers’ activities in The Academy, something that increased dramatically the number of subscribers to Canal Satélite Digital.

During the broadcasting of Operación triunfo programme, the channel followed live, not only the life of the singers in the high performance centre but also showed live and full specials of the publicity rests with interviews from the studio itself, so as not to lose the smallest detail.

This channel, produced entirely by Gestmusic, followed life in the Academy live for over three months, until the 18th of March 2002 to be precise, the day the Academy closed its doors and Canal Operación Triunfo began a new stage with 24-hour broadcasting, 365 days a year. From this time onwards, spaces combining the latest news with reports about the 16 with the best moments of the recent pass have been shown: the galas, life in the Academy, rehearsals, etc.

According to Josep M.Mainat the “channel has to work independently from the competition, we want it to have its own contents”, emphasising that it has additional programming focused on other topics as well as the programme, such as music and fashion.

Among the programmes on offer on Canal Operación Triunfo, aimed not only at diehard fans but also at music lovers in general, we can highlight:

“THE DAY THAT...”
Reports aimed at recalling some of the grand moments experienced in the Academy of Operación triunfo: visits by famous people, outstanding classes, special events, emotive and funny situations, interesting dialogues, etc.

“THE CHAT”
The stars of Operación triunfo (contestants, teachers, heads) answer live the questions posed by the channel’s viewers through mobile pone messages or the Internet forums. Presented by one of the academy’s teachers, Ŕngel Llŕcer.

“SUCCESS MANIA”
Live magazine led by Ainhoa Arbizu, with all the information, comments, live interviews and reports relating to the latest news from Operación triunfo: tour, what the contestants are doing, casting sessions, the singers agenda, recording sessions, etc.

“UNSEEN”
Moments from Operación triunfo that until now have never been seen on television. They are shots not included in the TVE programmes that correspond to the two initial months, when Canal Operación Triunfo still did not exist.

“MOVE YOURSELF!”
Daily programme for viewers of the channel to follow the gymnastics classes of Néstor and the corporal expression classes of Lawrence, having the contestants of Operación triunfo as classmates in physical exercise.

“TOP 25”
Open list of hits with the 25 best performances from Operación triunfo Galas. Viewers vote for their favourite and, during a period of 3 months, you can see how the songs enter, leave or change position on the list. At the end the list is definitive.

“DOUBT”
Cultural quiz about Operación triunfo presented by the freshest and cheekiest twins on television. They are DU and DA, Marisa and Cristina Sánchez and together they pose a daily question, or “DUDA”, about Operación triunfo.

This is just a part of the programming, which is completed with spaces dedicated to the meetings the contestants had with the psychologist, the rehearsals of the boys and girls, the best moments from the classes with Ŕngel Llŕcer, the sharing out of songs, the galas, the chats after the galas, the video clips of the young stars, the latest in music, latest news and, finally, everything there is to know about the first edition of the programme and everything referring to the second, now on air.

The Canal Operación Triunfo “Bazaar” is another of the fans’ favourite spaces, where they can buy some of the 200 Operación triunfo products that range from household articles through to clothes, leather goods, cosmetics or food, to mention just a few.

Another important fact to remember is the record sales made by the channel on the 21st of May 2002 with the broadcasting of the concert given by the members of Operación triunfo in Seville. Over 55,000 Spanish homes tuned into the concert by means of the musical box office of the digital operator, only 8% less than those attending in the Olympic Stadium in Seville. Sales on that day beat the previous held record by a long stretch: a concert by the Spice Girls and another by the Rolling Stones.
