The programme Festa major, created by Gestmusic to liven up Friday nights in the summer of 2001, was the direct heir of L’envelat, broadcast in summer 1997, although lengthened and adapted, since once again it involved a combination of two phenomena particular to Catalonia: the annual festival and the dance orchestras. The best groups, such as La Salseta de Poble Sec, Orquesta Cobla de Blanes, Huapacha Combo, Orquesta Volcán and Orquesta Cobla Costa Brava were some of the 21 who performed on the set, totally in Catalan, the popular tunes of all times. The whole show was produced with the dynamism of a fun quiz and presented by the show woman Lloll Bertran.
The programme was a full scale spectacle in which the presenter herself starred in many well known musical numbers, impersonating artists such as Estrellita Castro, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Cher, Madonna, Mónica Naranjo or Celia Cruz and always with a great sense of humour. The guest orchestras, over twenty of them during the show’s thirteen-programme run, played the most popular tunes, some of them by Ricky Martin, Queen, Abba, Tamara, Celine Dion or Tom Jones, among others.
A quiz completed the programme, the “Juego final” in which the competing couple who had won most points throughout the programme had to guess, in one and a half minutes, the title of fifteen songs in order to win cash prizes or trips. In this way, the tests, based on musical memory, a good ear and the imagination, were the perfect excuse for the programme to present many more songs. |
